Released primarily on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360, there are four games in the series; Call of Juarez (2006), Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood (2009), Call of Juarez: The Cartel (2011), and Call of Juarez: Gunslinger (2013). Techland has developed all four games, and as of 2018, owns the publishing rights. From 2006 to 2018, Ubisoft held the publishing rights. The original game takes place in Texas and Mexico in 1882 and tells the story of Reverend Ray McCall as he hunts down his nephew Billy, who has been wrongly accused of murdering his parents. Bound in Blood is a prequel to the first game and takes place in Arizona, Georgia, and Mexico in 1864 and 1866. It tells the story of how Ray and his brother Thomas went from being soldiers in the Confederate States Army to dangerous outlaws. The Cartel relocates the series from a Wild West milieu to 2011 Los Angeles and Mexico and depicts an interagency task force investigating a powerful Mexican drug cartel. This decision proved unpopular amongst fans, however, and Gunslinger returned to the West. Taking place from 1880 to 1910, and spread across Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, New Mexico Territory, Wyoming, and Mexico, it tells the story of bounty hunter Silas Greaves and his encounters with many of the legends of the Wild West, including Billy the Kid, Jesse James, Butch Cassidy, the Sundance Kid, and the Dalton Gang. From a gameplay perspective, all four games are first-person shooters, and feature several common game mechanics, such as "Concentration mode" (a slow motion technique which is slightly different from game to game) and duelling (in Bound in Blood and Gunslinger, duelling switches the game to a third-person perspective). The first three games in the series offer different player characters. For Gunslinger, there is only one player character, but the game does feature experience point-based skill trees which allow the player to customise their fighting style as they progress. Critically, reactions to the games have been mixed, ranging from general praise for Bound in Blood and Gunslinger to universal condemnation for The Cartel. In terms of sales, the original game did not sell well in North America, moving only 137,000 units across both PC and Xbox 360. However, its European sales were considerably better, with Techland crediting the game as putting them "on the map". Bound in Blood sold better, moving 900,000 units across all systems in its first four months of release. In December 2011, it was made available on the PlayStation Store and the Xbox Games Store, and in September 2019, it was released on GOG.com. It is the second game in the Call of Juarez series, although narratively, it is a prequel to the first game. The series would go on to include two additional games; Call of Juarez: The Cartel (set in the modern-day) and Call of Juarez: Gunslinger (narratively unrelated to the others, but set in the same milieu). Taking place seventeen years prior to the first game, Bound in Blood focuses on the McCall brothers; Ray and Thomas, who are both sergeants in the Confederate States Army, fighting in the American Civil War. In August 1864, as the conflict is nearing its end, they abandon their post to try to save their family home. Labelled deserters, they go on the run with their younger brother William, a trainee priest. Two years later, hiding out in Mexico, they meet the bandit Juan 'Juarez' Mendoza and his girlfriend Marisa, and first encounter the legend of the Gold of Juarez. With their army commander still pursuing them for their desertion, they enter into a dangerous alliance with Mendoza and an Apache tribe in order to find the gold. However, both brothers soon find themselves falling in love with Marisa. In making Bound in Blood, Techland looked at the reception of the first game, specifically what was popular and what was not. With this in mind, they removed the much-maligned stealth and platforming elements and foregrounded the well-received shoot 'em up elements. Drawing inspiration from a variety of films and television, they sought to make something that would fall somewhere between a Spaghetti Western and a more traditional classical Hollywood western. So whilst the game's violence is over the top, its themes were modelled after the real-life issues of the day, with the script touching upon such topics as the psychological effects of the American Civil War on those who fought it, Mexican banditry, racism, and white suppression and displacement of Native Americans. Bound in Blood received mainly positive reviews. Most critics found it substantially better than the original, and many praised the plot, the shooting mechanics, the authentic western tone, the voice acting, and the multiplayer. Please consider supporting us on Patreon: 🤍 Video games have replicated myriad historical periods, recreating the likes of ancient military conflicts in strategy games and both world wars in third and first-person shooters. World War II, in particular, has long remained a favorite backdrop for first-person military shooters, and by the mid-aughts, such titles dominated the genre in nearly every conceivable way. Battlefield, Call of Duty, and Medal of Honor enjoyed great success on this front, effectively laying the foundation for all manner of copycats. But Polish developer Techland adopted a different approach when devising plans for its second stab at an FPS property. For Call of Juarez, the studio turned to the Wild West, a period in American history whose romanticization spawned the western film genre that inspired several generations of popular culture. This iconic and resonating era surprisingly received little love within the realm of gaming, however, which further stimulated Techland’s interest in pursuing a “serious” western adventure. While Call of Juarez never garnered much in the way of high praise, the franchise’s first two outings possessed a certain charm that many would argue dissipated as the series trotted on. The third entry, the dismally reviewed Call of Juarez: The Cartel, drew the shortest straw of them all upon failing to justify its drastic shift to a modern-day setting. And though Gunslinger—the fourth and final installment—delivered a thrilling arcade-like romp, it, not unlike the IP as a whole, faded into obscurity once the initial excitement surrounding its release wore off. Techland has since moved on to greener pastures, its talents reinvigorating first-person action in an entirely different genre. But those who long for Old West-set exploits may fondly remember the days gone by when Call of Juarez held more promise than the Gold Rush. This is the rise and fall of Call of Juarez. After the release of Call of Juarez: The Cartel, Techland had two options, let the series die and put a large focus into their new favorite genre being zombie games, or give the series the swan song it deserves with Gunslinger. Turns out they made the right choice, because this is regarded to often as the best game in the series, and even one of Techland’s best titles overall. So today, let’s talk about the Redemption of Call of Juarez- Gunslinger. The game is known for its fantastic shooting and its narrative structure, with the story of the game being narrated by a man named Silas Greaves, a bounty hunter of the West during the second half of the 19th century. Very similar to the game Bastion, Silas is a great narrator and storyteller, but the lines of fact and fiction are often stumbled over like a drunk man leaving a saloon, referencing real life outlaws of the west like Billy The Kid, Jesse James and Butch Cassidy, but maybe embellishing his encounters with them just little bit. But it’s not just the stories and shooting, it’s the great graphics and art style and killer voice acting as well that really sell this game as an overall smooth and solid experience that is more than enough to wash down the stagnant gutter water that was the Cartel. The Call of Juarez series is criminally underrated when it comes to the Western genre, which is a shame, as I believe that these games are charming in their fast and responsive gunplay, gorgeous visual style, and authentic storytelling. It has had a lot of ups and downs across its four games: Call of Juarez, Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood, Call of Juarez: The Cartel, and, of course, Call of Juarez: Gunslinger, which is the main subject of this video. Today, my goal was to shine a light on this series and its history, which lead to the creation of its final entry. Call of Juarez: Gunslinger is a linear first-person shooter game. Like the previous Call of Juarez games, the game consists of completing objectives to progress through the game. Staple gameplay elements of the series such as bullet-time and gunslinger duels make a return. A novel element is the occasional ability to dodge bullets via a quick time event. The North American PC release version of the game was one of the first PC games optimized for Windows Vista and DirectX 10. Call of Juarez is the first game in the Call of Juarez series. The game tells the story of Billy "Candle" and Ray McCall, a former gunslinger turned preacher. After two years in Juarez looking for the mysterious "Gold of Juarez", Billy returns to his home town of Hope, Texas, near the Mexican border. However, when he arrives at his farm, he finds his mother and stepfather have been murdered, and "Call of Juarez" written on a barn in their blood. Mistakenly believing that Billy is the killer, McCall (his step-uncle) abandons his role as the town's preacher and sets out to avenge their deaths by killing Billy, as Billy himself tries to find out who actually committed the murders, and why. Call of Juarez received mixed to positive reviews, with most critics praising Ray's levels and the general shooting mechanics, but finding Billy's levels considerably inferior, especially the platforming sections. Although the game did not sell very well in North America, it fared better in Europe, with Techland citing it as "putting us on the map." Overall, the game was enough of a success that Techland and Ubisoft established a Call of Juarez franchise.

Taking place roughly twenty years prior to the first game, Bound in Blood focuses on the McCall brothers; Ray and Thomas. Labelled deserters, they go on the run, with their younger brother William, a priest, joining them. Two years later, hiding out in Mexico, they meet the bandit Juan Mendoza and his girlfriend Marisa, and first encounter the legend of the Gold of Juarez. With their army commander still pursuing them, they enter into a dangerous alliance with Mendoza and an Apache tribe in order to find the gold. Bound in Blood received mainly positive reviews. Most critics praised the plot, the general shooting mechanics, the game's authentic western tone, and the multiplayer mode. Criticism tended to focus on poor enemy AI, repetitive level design, and, especially, the lack of any kind of co-op mode. Some critics also found the single-player mode too short and easy. The game was a commercial success, selling close to one million units worldwide across all systems, considerably more than the first game.
Running on Chrome Engine 5, there's a big common technical ground between the slick, arcade thrills of Gunslinger and the open-world production of the Dead Island series. Switch tackles this last-gen port with improved visuals - while its sub-30fps performance does cast some doubt on how other ports using this engine will fare. I’ve been playing through the Call of Juarez series and since the first title people have been telling me to skip The Cartel. They all trashed it, I actually haven’t seen a single person say they liked it, 100% of feedback was negative in my comments. I wanted to find something good to talk about. I was rooting for the underdog, but my god, this game was absolutely terrible, and it nearly killed the whole series. Check out My GOG page.
