ElixirConf 2022 - Jason Stiebs - I was wrong about LiveView

As a core team member, I tried to talk Chris out of building LiveView. I was wrong. Hype for LiveView grew, and I assumed it would only be a back-office tool. I was wrong again. I now believe we can and should use it everywhere. Throughout this talk, you'll find out why. The past few years, I've had the chance to use LiveView in production: replacing old SPA's that nobody wanted to touch, writing green field applications, and even adding some interactivity to mostly static sites. Through practical examples, we'll take a tour of my lessons learned as a contractor using LiveView across this variety of projects. We'll see how little code it takes to tackle those dynamic features and how LiveView lets you focus on delivering value rather than wrangling layers of client/server tooling. Whether on the fence about LiveView or all-in but just getting started, you'll leave this talk with practical insights to use in your own applications and if we're lucky, a new appreciation for just what LiveView has to offer.

Intro to Phoenix LiveView with New Project Example - Elixir Programming Language

Learn how Phoenix LiveView allows you to build declarative, interactive, and real-time web applications without all the complexity. In this presentation Tim Gremore, Development Lead at Headway is joined by senior software developers, Jordan Burke and Jesse Hixson to host an introduction to Phoenix LiveView, an exciting new library that enables rich, real-time user experiences with server-rendered HTML. They also walk through a Phoenix LiveView example so you can see what it's like to start a new project from design specs. Phoenix LiveView for web developers who don't know Elixir.

To learn more about Elixir & Phoenix, checkout my course: "Elixir & Phoenix for Beginners" 🤍 In this video, you'll learn about a new technology called Phoenix LiveView. So What's Phoenix LiveView? It's a library that allows you to build web applications that offer rich, real-time user experiences while avoiding the massive complexity associated with writing and maintaining Single Page Applications. I like to think of it as a sensible alternative to Single Page Applications. NOTE: This video was created for web developers who don't know Phoenix or Elixir, however if you do know Phoenix & Elixir, you should still find a lot of value in this video. Phoenix's LiveView strengths and implementation • Geoffrey Lessel

This presentation was recorded at GOTOpia Chicago 2021. #GOTOcon #GOTOpia 🤍 Geoffrey Lessel - Developer at Planning Center; Author of Phoenix in Action; Wannabe Renaissance Man ABSTRACT Backed by the proven real-time capabilities of Elixir, Phoenix’s LiveView opens up a new world of possibilities for soft real-time web applications. Whether you need to manage the connections thousands of concurrent visitors in a chat application or simply push real-time updates of constantly changing information to a single user, LiveView makes it trivial with minimal JavaScript (sometimes none at all). In this live-coding presentation, we’ll convert a typical controller in a MVC application into a LiveView controller. Along the way, we’ll discover some of the major benefits that LiveView provides and you’ll see how easy it is to implement in your own applications [...] TIMECODES 00:00 Intro 01:42 Phoenix LiveView benefits 06:39 Demo 38:57 Outro Download slides and read the full abstract here: 🤍 RECOMMENDED BOOKS Geoffrey Lessel • Phoenix in Action • 🤍 Lance Halvorsen • Functional Web Development with Elixir, OTP & Phoenix • 🤍 Voloz & Richey • Phoenix Web Development • 🤍 McCord, Tate & Valim • Programming Phoenix 1.4 • 🤍 Saša Jurić • Elixir in Action • 🤍 🤍 🤍 🤍 #Elixir #PhoenixLiveView #LiveView #Phoenix #WebApp #JS #JavaScript #MVC #Erlang #WebFramework #LiveCoding #BEAM #BEAMvm Looking for a unique learning experience? ElixirConf 2022 - Ryan Cooke - E2E Reactivity - using Svelte with Phoenix LiveView

In this talk, Ryan will demonstrate how to use Svelte with Phoenix LiveView to create a dramatically reactive and fast user web experience. By leveraging Svelte's reactive component properties, combined with LiveView's web socket assignments, page rendering and state management transforms into a fully cohesive pattern from the back end to the browser. This eliminates redundant state management split across codebases while streamlining data moving from the browser to databases. And applications that leverage Phoenix's PubSub for updating state across multiple backend servers can trigger page re-renders across browser sessions or tabs consistently. Svelte will selectively re-render DOM elements based on which component properties are updating for a snappy user experience. Svelte also provides native support for transitions and animations, giving developers full control to create slick user experiences from the browser. Ryan will also share his delight in creating reactive properties as JavaScript variables and templating complex UIs with simple boolean and looping control structures.

ElixirConf 2021 - Chris Nelson - LiveView and Web Components

Phoenix LiveView is a great way to add a rich client experience to your Phoenix/Elixir application without needing the complexity of a Javascript framework like Angular and React. However, there are some times in building LiveView apps where you might want to add functionality on the client-side. Web Components, or more specifically, Custom HTML Elements, are a tool you might not have thought to reach for in these situations. LiveView already excels at generating and managing HTML Elements, and since Custom HTML Elements are still just HTML Elements, things work out surprisingly well. In this session, we’ll share our experience building several real-world Phoenix apps with Web Components. We’ll briefly review how Custom Elements work and how easy they are to build and work with. We’ll look at common scenarios in our LiveView apps where Custom Elements can help us. We’ll also share our open source library that helps Custom Elements fit into LiveView even more seamlessly.

ElixirConf 2022 - Roger Roelofs - A Javascripter's trip to Phoenix and LiveView

Web app development over the last two decades has been a pendulum swinging between back-end and front-end. That is because we want as much interactivity as close to the user as we can manage without driving ourselves crazy. The incompatibilities of client execution environments pushed the development of 'batteries included' frameworks like Rails which promised: "You don't have to write Javascript". That was a lie. Today we have LiveView, which manages to push in both directions at the same time. Even so, we still need to write some Javascript. The big productivity win is that LiveView takes care of the mundane use cases, which frees us to work on the important and interesting bits.

Live View Pro Review - The Best Golf Training Aid

Pick Up LiveView Pro Here: 🤍 I recently had a chance to meet the inventor of the LiveView Pro out at our club so I could do this review. I had heard about it a while back but didn't take the time to see how incredible it actually is. The LiveView Pro acts as a digital swing mirror. This means you can see your down the line swing view right in front of you. How it does this is by connecting to your ipad. So you set the ipad at your feet. You put the LiveView Pro down the line. Now, as you make swings, you can see exactly what you are doing. In the past, if I wanted to see this view of my swing I would set up my phone on a tripod down the line. I would make a few swings then go back to my phone and review them. No anymore. No going back to your phone. You see this view of your swing live right in front of you. This is not to say that the LiveView Pro is only for down the line. You could position it behind you, on an angle and even in front of you (I would do this in practice swings). You can use this for pitching, chipping and bunker shots. It's great for putting too. You can literally sit it on the green behind you as you make you stroke to see if you are coming too much from the inside or out. You can then position the tripod above your stroke to see how the putter face is contacting the ball. Hopefully you see how amazing the LiveView Pro is. If only I had this years ago when I was working on my swing. This would have saved me years of practice because I would have know instantly if I was working on the right thing or not. In my honest opinion, the LiveView Pro truly is the best training aid for golf on the market today. Do yourself a favor and pick one up today.
