This past spring I met up with Mark and Jimmy from the Vortex Nation Podcast to help them build two awesome Osage Orange Selfbows. This bow building video is the first in a three part series they produced. This video covers the entire process of how to build a wooden longbow from stave to finished self bow. It's a complete guide. We start with a whole log and use wedges to split it into bow staves. From there we chase a ring, draw the bow's profile and use a draw knife to cut the bow to shape. Then comes tillering, the process of shaving off wood so that the bow limbs bend evenly and we reach the draw weight we're after. In the second video we'll take these new primitive bows out for an archery lesson and some stump shooting. Don't forget to subscribe to the channel. We're uploading a new video each week that features one of the following topics: archery, bow hunting, bow building, survival skills, bushcraft, self reliance, primitive skills, primitive bows, hunting, camping, fishing, and a lot more! I build an osage selfbow start to finish in pics.
I’m really excited to be building a longbow from Osage Orange in this video. This will be the first time I’ve completed a bow on video and it’s fun to break these type of projects down for you. Although it was a challenge, it was definitely worth the trouble. This type of long bow, which is actually a flatbow, because of the flat, rectangular shaped limbs, being made from one continuous piece of wood from tip to tip, is called a selfbow. I’ll walk you through the steps of picking out a stave, chasing a growth ring, laying out the measurements of your bow, to finally tillering it to your final draw weight. Thank you all for watching and I hope you are inspired to start, or continue, your own bow making adventure. Osage Orange is one of the best tree species we have for building selfbows. This video covers how to identify osage orange, what to look for in terms of quality, how to identify a good bow stave, and how to cut bow staves safely. Harvesting osage can be a challenge due to the tangled tops and thick growing conditions. I'm attending the Oklahoma Selfbow Jamboree, OJAM, and the hosts were kind enough to let us harvest some bow wood on their property. One of the most difficult things about harvesting osage bow staves is getting the trees to drop once cut. Due to the thick growing conditions, the tops often get tangled with one another making it difficult to safely get the logs on the ground. Osage has thorns, furrowed bark and often grows in association with elm and locust in bottom land forests along creeks. These staves were harvested in spring when there were no fruits so other features are used in identification. Harvest time matters little in my opinion. In future videos we'll split bow staves and follow a few bow building beginners through the process at the OJAM in central Oklahoma. Making your own traditional archery equipment, or even your own self bow or longbow is a great way to get more involved with archery and bow hunting, improve your self reliance, bushcraft, and survival skills. I took the back sinew from the bull elk I killed this September and backed the osage bow that killed him. Backing this bow with sinew drew it into a reflex and added about six pounds to the draw weight. The standard for measuring speed of a traditional bow, whether it be a selfbow, longbow, or recurve, is to shoot an arrow weighing 10 grains per pound of draw weight. This combination is right at that. This bow and arrow have the following specs. 57lb bow, 29 inch draw, 565 grain arrow. Although it is possible to build sinew backed bows that will shoot a lot faster than this, the speed of this bow in combination with it's durable and accurate design make it a very practical hunting bow that rivals the performance of any modern material traditional bow. This week we're back with another traditional bow building video, building a snakey osage orange selfbow from start to finish. We'll start with a seasoned osage bow stave and use a draw knife to remove the bark. Then we chase a ring to get the bow's back to one single growth ring. I'm using a very basic bow building tool kit on this one - for the most part just a draw knife and farrier's rasp. I'll take you through laying the bow out, drawing the limb profiles, roughing out the bow and final tillering. When we're all done I strap on a bow quiver, load it up with arrows and head out to the pasture to shoot a few arrows. This longbow has slightly reflexed tips but you could use the same heat bending techniques to make a recurve bow if desired. For the most part this is an ASMR video but you should be able to see what's going on if you want to use this as a guide for building your own osage longbow. But i do have other videos on the channel that explain primitive bow making in depth. Don't forget to subscribe to the channel. Join me for some shooting with the Osage Self Bow! This is the most addictive bow ever and a really cool new way to up the game with your traditional archery and bowhunting!
In this video I bring you guys along on a 9 months journey hand crafting a 58” osage self bow. This bow is Unbacked and is pulling 43# at 28” This bow was inspired by the horns of the Cape buffalo. It’s shortness gives the archer piece of mind shooting from a tree stand or ground blind. The deflex in the handle allows this bow to be drawn safely to 28”
In this video I show you guys the steps I take in putting extreme heat bending in the limbs and handle section.
Will a 47-inch osage orange self-bow outperform its transformation to a 42-inch self-bow? Lets test the FPS, draw weight and draw length of both and you be the judge.
Today we are in the shop dreaming of the upcoming seasons. After breaking my selfbow last fall, I’m in need of another. Pull up a chair and join me in my shop while I try to make one. Go easy on me, I’m still green in bow making. #selfbows #recurvebow #diyhunting #osagebow #osagestave
🤍 🤍 🤍 The Roots School Bow Building course occurs every winter in Central Vermont. This course brings the student from a seasoned stave to a finished, hunting weight long bow. Although mostly workshop, a series of several short lectures are given to expand on subjects such as: wood selection and harvesting, bow design and performance, tillering, and instinctive shooting. The class covers primitive bow building on a conceptual level as well as each step in the technical process from peeling back the bark to twisting your own strings. We will also discuss the bow in the context of survival skills. This class is a tremendous experience whether you are a hunter looking to hunt with your own handmade tackle or a lover of archery and its long history looking for a new bow to enjoy and shoot.
This is a 40 inch osage orange native style bow which shoots at 53 pounds at 22 inches. It weighs less than 8 ounces.
This week my oldest boy Coye is building his own Osage recurve selfbow. He's outgrown his last traditional bow and, with some bow hunting trips coming up, he needed a new one. He shows how to build a selfbow from start to finish, including tillering, cutting the nocks in, and finally shooting his new bow. Building a wood bow from a stave isn't hard, it just takes some practice. We're just getting ready to head out hog hunting now and both kids will have their bow and arrows along. With us luck! Knots on the back of an osage self bow stave can be one of the most intimidating parts of the bow making process. This video shows how Clay Hayes works around a knot to chase a ring on the back of an osage orange bow stave. The entire primitive bow building process is covered in detail in the Traditional Bowyer's Handbook as well as on Clay's Patreon site. Chasing a ring on an osage stave is one of the first steps in making a longbow, recurve, or other wood bow. Bow building begins with harvesting a tree and splitting bow staves from the log. When splitting bow staves from logs, there are a few things to take into consideration. You'll need at least two wedges and preferably 4 or 5 of different sizes. These are important bow building tools. Long thin wedges or an axe head work well for starting the split, while shorter wider wedges work well for opening up the log and separating the staves. Here, we're splitting bow staves from Osage orange but this technique will work well for most bow wood like hickory, elm, red oak, maple, etc. Start with a thin wedge or axe head in the small end of the log. The most important thing is to keep the two halves roughly equal in size. After that, look for knots or other imperfections that may affect how many staves you can get from a log. Building a primitive bow, longbow, recurve bow, or selfbow from start to finish is a very satisfying experience even if you never intend to go bow hunting. It is a valuable skill to have if you're looking to expand your archery, self reliance, bushcraft, and survival skills. Hunting with a bow and arrow, especially one that you've made yourself, requires great patience and woodsmanship. In a future video I'll cover the making of a survival bow from eastern red cedar and rawhide backing. From live tree to deadly weapon in three days! Snakey Osage staves make beautiful and unique bows but they can be intimidating if you've never tackled one before. The biggest challenge can be laying out the bow on the stave to correctly follow the wavy grain. This video takes you step by step through the process of designing and laying out a snakey osage bow.
HERE I DESCRIBE THE IMPORTANCE OF STRENGTH TRAINING FOR ACCURACY. NOTHING CAN MAKE YOU STEADIER THAN STRENGTH.
In this video, I give tips on tillering as I am refinishing an Osage bow I built a long time ago. The stave is now a bow in that it has a string on it. It is close to shooting!!!! The bow nearly brakes on me as I am tillering it. I think I fixed it but I sure hope it does not shatter.
This week we're back in the bow making shop whipping out an osage orange recurve self bow. No talking, no explanation other than what you see. Just straight up primitive bow building. a Bamboo backed osage reflex deflex long bow is a great way to get started into bow building if you're' not quite ready to tackle a selfbow or primitive bow from scratch. The process combines techniques from both the selfbow and laminate bow building processes. This video will show you step by step how to build a laminated longbow from natural materials that are readily available from archery supply houses like 3Rivers. With some slight modifications to the process, you could also make a recurve or straight limbed Howard Hill style long bow using the same techniques. Although these bows are a little different than the wood bows I'm accustomed to making, it was relatively easy to build and shot well. These bows would be a great way to become more involved with archery and would make an excellent choice for bow hunting or target archery.
