Given the recent explosion of modular synthesis and the complexity behind it, SOS Tutor and synthesis guru Tristan Malloch gives us an easy to follow introduction and beginners tutorial video to this otherwise overwhelming art. In this video Tristan uses the excellent free Eurorack Simulator available for all on Mac/Windows/Linux (see link below) and chains together simple VCA, VCO, VCF, Envelope and Mixer modules to provide you with the starting template to create any sound. These techniques can be used across any modular synthesiser including Eurorack modules and self contained modular synths. By chaining together various modules and explaining the much maligned trigger techniques this video will give you a flying start on your pathway to exploring modular synthesis. One of the really interesting things about VCV Rack in my view is, besides being open source and free, that it comes with free versions of Mutable Instruments’ modules, some of the most sought after and successful eurorack modules. Controversially, Olivier (Mutable CEO) has decided to discontinue some of the most successful ones… yet the most admirable thing he does is to open source the code for his modules, so they have the potential to live on and evolve forever. The big question I had is, how do they compare to the real thing? If the differences are small or even unnoticeable, VCVRack can become very disruptive. I picked three of his most beautifully sounding modules (in my view of course…) Elements, Rings and Clouds (which is has been discontinued!) – and I compare the sound of the hardware to that of the software. These modules are digital, so they have a good chance of sounding similar, but DAC and other hardware magic or software tweaks might make a difference. * Want to support the channel - and get ALL my tips in one convenient place including those to come in the future? NOTE: If you're going to use a DC Coupled interface use a floating ring TRS cable and not the one shown in the video - see more info below. * Want to support the channel - and get ALL my tips in one convenient place including those to come in the future? But there's a way put together a hybrid modular synth in a gradual, focused way, by only getting the modules you need in hardware form, and integrating others using software. After experimenting a lot with creating a hybrid VCV/Eurorack - I can say it works really nicely. If anyone asks me what's my one must have Eurorack module, it's definitely one which will let you bridge between virtual modules and real ones. In this video I review the ES-8 from Expert Sleepers and the 8A from MOTU, check out their pros and cons, and how well they integrate with virtual eurorack from VCV, Softube and other software. TRS CABLE NOTE: A note regarding the cable I mentioned around 14:25 - Thanks to Andrew from Expert Sleepers for this comment: DUAL INTERFACE NOTE: Using two interfaces doesn't work properly on Windows and isn't officially supported for Mac by VCV, however, they've announced v2 will contain dual interface support Click here for more info: 🤍 In general special cables are recommended when using a DC-coupled audio interface as a source of CVs. Most audio interfaces have balanced outputs (on TRS ('stereo') jacks or XLRs), while synth CV inputs are unbalanced (usually on TS ('mono') jacks or minijacks). If you use a regular stereo or mono jack lead, you'll be shorting out one of the balanced output signals (usually the R (ring) to the S (shield)). While this probably wouldn't be a problem for normal audio use, when outputting the sustained voltages that are useful as CVs you risk damaging the interface hardware. My take on this very compelling hardware eurorack emulator, VCV RACK 2 PRO. Are you using VCV RACK? If so, how has it made it into your workflow? What are your thoughts? Let me know in the comment section below and we can discuss!

A performance comparison between VCVRack, an open-source virtual modular synthesiser, and miRack, its optimised fork. miRack is primarily targeting Raspberry Pi, ASUS Tinker Board and similar hardware, but it can also provide a better experience on desktops. miRack 🤍 VCVRack 🤍 mifki 🤍
This is a show and tell demo, with a patch from scratch, on how it feels to use VCVrack on a large 27" touchscreen. Quite fun, though VCVrack is not multi-touch capable, when using it with a touchscreen, it still gives a pretty good hands on impression of a real hardware eurorack synthesizer. But with all the advantages of software (recallability, price, scalability, flexibility). If you like what I do and want to support my work, consider joining me on Patreon - 🤍 I also created a document full of patching techniques and ideas that I will continue updating - 🤍 You can get the WAV file for this performance on my Patreon page - 🤍 Here are some patch notes - - I have a sequence programmed on the KSP, which is sequencing the O Coast. - The O Coast is going into VCV Rack through the Chronoblob 2 and Plateau. - The KSP is also triggering the Basimilus, which is going through the LedRover for extra character when needed. - There's another copy of the Basimilus going through a HP filter and to the Mimeophon. - I've recorded a wooden percussion frog into the Arbhar foe some texture. - I also recorded the new cello instrument from Felt Instruments into Magneto in Sample mode, and this is going through Flame from Vult for distortion. - I have a recording of the Basimilus on Morphagene, which plays it also in reverse. - I also recorded the piano from Felt Instruments into Nebulae, which is playing it slower and it goes also through the Disting for reverb. - I'm using the Microcell in Granular mode, and I recorded myself with a mic into it. I'm using DistroKid to distribute my music to Spotify, iTunes, Apple Music, and more.
