Artist Biography: Balsam Grove is a three-piece American rock band which comprises Larry Lee Hansen (lead vocals, guitar), Michael Ermis (bass guitar), and Jim Tobakos (lead guitar, backing vocals). Taking inspiration from a wide variety of music and art, the band’s sound is infused with each member’s diverse musical background, and it shows — guitar sections that vary from chaotic heavy metal riffing, to math rock leads, and even ethereal passages. These guitar soundscapes are then complimented by Ermis’s bass lines, which are both heavy and groove-oriented, while also coming across as jazz-inspired. The emotional vocal performances by Hansen give these compositions a personal lyrical narrative, ranging from vulnerably intimate to unrelentingly aggressive. It is a safe bet that rock fans of all kinds will find something to enjoy about Balsam Grove’s music, or even better yet — something to relate to. The band formed in 2018 when Hansen and Ermis met while studying sound recording at a community college in South Texas. The two were joined by drummer Bryan Renkes, guitarists Gavin Solis and Logan Wood, as well as producer Gigi Garcia who helped them record their debut EP. Originally intended to be a recording project of sorts, Hansen suggested forming a band after sharing demos and enjoying the musical chemistry of the group. The band released its first single, “Echoes of the Past” and its accompanying music video in July 2018. The success of their EP earned them local media attention and radio airplay. Following the release of their EP, Balsam Grove began playing shows around the coastal bend and becoming active in the local music scene. In December 2018, the band’s original lineup released its final single, “Civil Twilight” then announced their indefinite hiatus. In 2019, things shifted drastically for Balsam Grove. The future of the band was unsure, but the personal meaning that both Hansen and Ermis placed in the band’s music inspired them to carry on. The two joined forces with Michigan guitarist/producer Jim Tobakos, who would become the band’s lead guitarist as well as a contributing songwriter. This change in lineup saw Balsam Grove’s early sound start to shift into something more mature, more articulate. After over a year of writing and recording new material, Balsam Grove announces the next offering of their catalogue: Their self-titled debut full-length record, which will be released in Summer 2020. Destructive flash flood rips down Appalachians through Pisgah National Forest in Balsam Grove, North Carolina after a foot of rainfall from Tropical Depression Fred. This flash flood swamped homes and vehicles along the North Fork French Broad River and prompted numerous swift water rescues. The vehicle pictured in this video was unable to be reached by firefighters with the extreme conditions. Hopefully the occupants were able to crawl to safety before the flash flood got too violent.

Hike at Living Waters, Balsam Grove, NC. Starting at Mill Shoals; the waterfall to the left is French Broad Falls, the one to the right is on Shoal Creek. The tree hanging over the falls wasn't there last week before the rains from the hurricane came through! Then hiking downstream to Bird Rock (aka Cathedral) Falls.
