In this video I will give you an introduction to lxc containers and how you can use lxd to work with machine containers. lxd is a light weight alternative to hypervisors. You can spin up a virtual machine very quickly. It is very light on resources. I will be using Ubuntu 18.04 virtual machine in this demo and show you how to install and launch machine containers. I will also show you how to use some commonly used commands. Linux Containers Playlist: 🤍 For any issues/feedback, please leave me a comment and I will get back to you as quickly as I can. Now that you've created your first virtual machine, let's learn how to create containers in Proxmox! As we saw before, virtual machines have a complete environment - a full OS, applications that are running on that OS, and they're separated from the other VMs that are running on the same hypervisor. Whereas, a container, or more specifically an LXC container, is a Linux environment that shares a common kernel. Click here to get the full Promox training course: 🤍 #Viatto #proxmox

LXD is a next generation container manager that provides additional features that are similar to virtual machines, such as snapshots, storage pools, and more. Using Linux containers (LXC) as the container type, LXD gives you the best of two worlds. In this video, I'll go over the basics of LXD. You'll learn how to set it up and launch containers. LXC, from Start to Finish

LXC is a native form of containers available in the mainline Linux kernel for several years now. Unlike Docker, LXC provides a full "system" container and can even be used for GUI desktop environments. In this video I show how to install and setup LXC on a Fedora 26 host as well as how to create your first container (also Fedora 26) which is very minimal... and how to build it up via package manager to a complete GUI container including video and audio playback accessed via the x2go remoting protocol that runs over ssh. I did make a few minor mistakes and typos along the way, but making mistakes is how we learn, right? I have also made GUI containers of other distributions including CentOS 7, Ubuntu 16.04, Debian 9, and OpenSUSE 42.3... using the pre-made OS Templates shown listed in the video... using their native packages managers, mostly the same packages, and all running systemd and accessible via x2go. Screencast recorded under Fedora 26 with simplescreenrecorder from the rpmfusion repository. I also made a follow-up video that shows how to record a screencast from within the container.

The video is based on Proxmox, but concentrates on LXC containers meaning that you can actually use knowledge shared here without Proxmox. Topics discussed include bind mounts, id mapping, troubleshooting permission and file ownership issues, idmap, subuid/subgid issues, etc. Chapters: 00:00 Intro 00:35 Background and motivation 01:14 Goals and prerequisites 02:04 Bind mount basics 07:34 Intro to ID maps 10:57 An oversimplified example 12:06 A full blown example 15:15 subuids and subgids 18:52 Troubleshooting permission issues 21:55 Fake local users / groups 27:12 Ownership problems? 29:00 umask basics 32:10 Mapping host users to LXC containers 37:36 Home folder issue caused by idmap 41:00 Let's add Docker to the mix! 44:22 Outro This is a particularly hot topic on Reddit and Proxmox forums, yet most people ask questions and the answers are usually scarce. Between the power draw and cooling requirements of running my own server rack, it's time for some much needed consolidation, starting with virtualizing my TrueNAS and Proxmox servers into one massively overkill box. Oh, and I'll be installing TrueNAS Scale, based on Debian Linux! But first... What am I drinking??? A two-fer of disappointments unfortunately. Between the Plug and Play IPA from Matchless, to the KCBC Kung Fu Karaoke, there's just not a lot of good things I can say. Quick demonstration on how to use a Linux LXC/LXD virtual machine container to build and deploy a Blazor server application to a standard Linux Ubuntu instance. This will work with any Linux install that has the LXD container system available to it, and it will run locally on an old laptop/PC/server as well as running just the same in a VM on Amazon cloud, Azure or any other remote VM system running a regular Linux distro.
