CNBC's Deirdre Bosa joins 'Closing Bell' to report that tech company Amazon has added a new member to its board shortly after losing the lucrative JEDI cloud contract to Microsoft. Subscribe to CNBC PRO for access to investor and analyst insights on Amazon and more: 🤍 Amazon announced on Wednesday that Keith Alexander, a former National Security Agency director, has been named to the company’s board of directors. Alexander will bring considerable national security and cybersecurity experience to Amazon’s 11-person board. Alexander, a four-star Army general, previously served as NSA director and commander of the U.S. Cyber Command. He’s now co-CEO and president of IronNet Cybersecurity. Alexander’s appointment comes at a critical time for Amazon. The company remains locked in a battle with Microsoft over the JEDI, or Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure, cloud contract. The JEDI contract has become one of the most hotly contested contracts for the Department of Defense, as it’s meant to help modernize the Pentagon’s IT infrastructure and could be worth up to $10 billion for services rendered over as many as 10 years. Last week, the Pentagon said it would stick with its decision to award Microsoft the contract, following its extensive re-evaluation of JEDI cloud proposals. Amazon said in a scathing blog post that it would continue to seek a review of the situation. Amazon told CNBC in a statement that it selected Alexander because he is highly qualified, citing his public policy experience. The company stressed that Alexander’s director role will not have any overlap with Amazon Web Services’ management. Amazon added that Alexander will continue to follow strict conflict of interest rules for government contracting in his duties as a board member. Alexander’s company, IronNet, offers cybersecurity products that are certified for use by federal organizations and some of its employees have served in the armed forces or other federal positions, according to its website. Alexander was awarded 288 shares of common stock as part of his appointment, which will vest in three equal annual installments beginning on Nov. 15, 2021. Amazon shares closed at $3,268.61 per share on Wednesday. » Subscribe to CNBC TV: 🤍 » Subscribe to CNBC: 🤍 » Subscribe to CNBC Classic: 🤍 Turn to CNBC TV for the latest stock market news and analysis. In the wake of the legendary conqueror Alexander the Great, his mightiest generals vied for dominance over his empire, the largest the world had ever yet seen. One of these was Antigonus Monophthalmus, the One-Eyed. His epic tale is one of power and ambition, with more than a touch of hubris. Had it not been for how worried he made the other Successors, or Diadochi, he may well have remained the most powerful of all. And yet it was precisely his power in life that ultimately led to his death, at the age of 81, in the place he spent all his life - in the front line of battle. As soon as the Partition of Babylon was held, Antigonus went on an expansive spree of war, picking off enemies and annexing lands, one after the other. Accompanied or aided at all times by his son Demetrius, who would won day perhaps even eclipse him, Antigonus soon had all Asia under his dominion. From Macedonian noble to Satrap of Lycaonia to Royal General of Asia to Lord of all Asia. But naturally with such power came danger, and his competitors, other Diadochi like Seleucus, Ptolemy and Lysimachus, did not like how ambitious Antigonus was getting. He'd already proved his worth in Asia, Egypt, Greece, on land and on sea, and had set his eyes on the rest of the known world. This video is a sort of documentary of his story, from meteoric start to tragic yet epic downfall, and a look into how his person and deeds laid the foundations of an empire which lasted in Macedon until the Roman Republic conquered it. Alexander the Great is one of the most extraordinary individuals in history. He became king of the fringe Greek kingdom of Macedonia in 336 BC at the age of just 20, and before his death twelve years later, had imposed Macedonian overlordship on Greece, destroyed the mighty Persian Empire and led an army deep into modern Afghanistan and to the Indian frontier. At Opis he faced a mutiny by his Macedonian troops, angered that he wanted to send some of them home, while appearing to give preference to his new Asian subjects, and adopting many of their customs. Alexander dealt ruthlessly with the ringleaders, before (according to 'The Anabasis' by Roman historian Arrian) making a speech to his army in which he berated his troops for their disloyalty. The speech, as it has reached us, was no doubt written by Arrian rather than Alexander. His actual words are now impossible to ascertain. But Arrian had access to eyewitness accounts which are now lost (principally Ptolemy and Nearchus), and modern historians generally agree that the speech was a real historical event, and that Arrian gives a good representation of its likely content. Putting its (contested and debated) value as a historical source to one side, the scene - as it appears in Arrian - is a brilliantly written moment of high drama and emotion, in which Alexander first highlights his debt to his father Philip, before launching into a tirade in which he lists his own astounding achievements and qualities of leadership. The speech has been abridged and edited by myself for this video.
