As the moon rotates around the earth it travels through phases. The alignment of the sun, earth, and moon create the phases. I use an orrery to explain the moon's alignment during, new moon, waxing crescent, ist quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, last quarter, waning crescent, and back to new moon. The sidereal period is 27.3 and the moon is measured against stars. The synodic period is 29.5 days and the moon is measured against the sun. The Sun always illuminates half of the Moon while the other half remains dark. Let’s take a look at the individual phases New Moon is the invisible phase of the Moon, with the illuminated side of the Moon facing the Sun and the night side facing Earth. Waxing Crescent. A tiny portion is visible to us. First Quarter. The Moon is now a quarter of the way through its monthly journey and you see half of its illuminated side. Waxing Gibbous Now most of the Moon’s dayside has come into view, and the Moon appears brighter. Full Moon This is illumination of the entire day side of the Moon (so, technically, this would be the real half moon). Waning Gibbous As the Moon begins its journey back toward the Sun. Last Quarter The Moon looks like it’s half illuminated from the Earth, but really you’re seeing half of the Moon. Waning Crescent All that we see from our perspective is a thin curve. When the Moon is close to Earth it's pulled more strongly by Earth's gravity, so it goes faster, but when the Moon is far, it's pulled less and goes slower 5. Remember the SUPERMOON the other day? On April 7-8 have a look how there was a full Moon during a time when the Moon was closest to Earth... and you'll know why it looked bigger. A nice coincidence 6. I have always been fascinated by astronomy ever since I was a kid. The motions of celestial bodies orbiting around each other were often shown with orreries in ancient times. This is my first attempt at designing a basic orrery with the sun, earth and moon. Too keep things simple the earth completes a full orbit around the sun for every 360 turns of the crank and the moon takes 30 rotations of the crank to orbit around the earth. I will be refining my design in a future version which will hopefully show the orbits of more planets with greater accuracy.
