William Goodge ran 3,064 Miles Across the United States from Los Angeles to New York in the Spring of 2023. This series was released in real-time, with an episode every Sunday, documenting each week of his Transcon. Enjoy. In Episode 1 of THE RUN ACROSS AMERICA, William's crew chief Robbie Balenger kick off the festivities with a 280-mile run from LA to Las Vegas, in a race called THE SPEED PROJECT. William lost his Mother Amanda in January 2018 to Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma Cancer when she was just 53 and found running as a therapy for dealing with the pain of that loss. Five years on since her passing, he has raised £100,000 or charities over his previous challenges. These include Running the Length of the UK in 2019, completing 48 Marathons in 30 Days, becoming the first person to run the 104-mile radius of Lake Como Italy, and completing the Marathon Des Sables, a 250km race in the Sahara Desert. Add those all up and they are nothing compared to what he is about to do. What begins as a search for the true America, during a period of political turmoil, ultimately becomes a story of identity as Gates begins to find clarity and meaning in his own life. My guest today Michael Wardian has long been on my list of athletes I've wanted to converse with on the Billy Yang Podcast because he very well might be the new Most Interesting Man In The World. Beyond his running resume and achievements - of which there are many including running 7 marathons in 7 continents in 7 days (all under 3 hours), being the last man standing at the Quarantine Backyard Ultra during the Covid shutdowns (260+ miles in over 63 hours) and multiple world records...he also manages to carry a full-time job, a wife, 2 sons and multiple different hobbies and passions outside of endurance sports. Today, we attempt to unpack as much of it that we can, find out how he recovers so quick, how to get out of low moments during races, who he enjoys competing against and what's exactly in store for what may be his biggest endurance feat yet: running across America this May 1st from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean in a project called Running Home. He was too anxious, too uncertain, choking in nearly every big track meet. He sought attention as a chatterbox and showman, waving snakes at his oldest sister’s friends while victimized by self-doubt that started in childhood and formed thick layers through adolescence and into adulthood. He had no idea what he wanted to do with his life. Frank only knew with certainty that he could run. He could run miles and miles without tiring or suffering. In town for the 1978 Boston Marathon, a book jumped off the shelf at him. My Run Across the United States chronicled Don Shepherd’s story of running from Los Angeles to New York in 1964. Suddenly, Frank had a goal. But running across America wasn’t enough for him. He needed to squash his battle with insecurity. He needed to break the world record for fastest transcontinental crossing on foot. When Frank failed to break the record on his first try, he set out for his second crossing sixteen months later. I'm running around the world, apparently... (I have nothing better to do) I started in London, and I'm going to Fiji, (near Florida) so I took the next flight to Miami. Turns out Fiji is nowhere near Florida. Now I'm running towards Hollywood California ...it's a ridiculous idea and I wouldn't recommend it. When I'm tired, I sleep. When I'm hungry, I eat. I run 20 - 60 miles per day, carrying my house in a 35lb belt around my waist, uploading the daily vlog videos. I recharge my batteries (literally, and metaphorically ;) at any plugs I spot along my route. Many kind people feed me, and give me a place to sleep, this is all part of the Journey. In my Batman Superhero Belt is a bug-proof camouflage hammock, which I'm really comfortable sleeping in, between any two trees. I wear thru my shoes every couple of months, and mail myself new pairs to addresses ahead of me. The most frequently asked question is "what's the goal?" My immediate response is.... STAY ALIVE. My second response is…. I just felt like running. The next question, should naturally be.... WHY?! Coz I can. Coz I'm physically able to. Because I didn't always feel this energetic, and I don't even like running nor do I call myself a "runner". I'm just a guy. I make videos. I was once sick and tired just like everyone else. I got so sick and tired, of feeling sick and tired that I began to question why do people get sick? Acid vs. Alkaline pH was the answer to this question, so I upgraded my nutrition choices to Fruitarian... (Fruits, Roots, Greens, Beans, Nuts & Seeds) Since 2006/7 I have not been sick once; no cold, flu, headache, cough or sore throat, no sneezing, wheezing, not even a runny nose. I have found the cure for the common cold. It's a lifestyle, not a "diet"... and no-one wants to hear it. Feeling this invincible inspired me to become a Vegangelist preacher. I wanted everyone one else to feel this good, and leave the animals, birds and fish alone. The solution to all this suffering is a peace fruit. Preaching to people about eating more bananas was like banging my head against a watermelon. I came to the conclusion that no one responds well to being told what to eat. So I'd have to get their attention another way. I had to do something they'd never seen before. Thru the only reliable method I know to work consistently; Monkey-see-Monkey-do. PEACE of Fruit ;)
